Indicator Phrasing

English: % of girls and women stating that they feel safe when accessing water

French: % de filles et de femmes affirmant qu’elles se sentent en sécurité pendant qu’elles collectent de l’eau

Czech: % dívek a žen, které se při cestě pro vodu necítí v ohrožení

What is its purpose?

Gender-based violence is one of the factors decreasing women’s (and households’ in general) access to water. The indicator therefore assesses the proportion of women and girls who feel safe when going to collect water.

How to Collect and Analyse the Required Data

Collect the following data by conducting individual interviews with a representative sample of girls and women:

RECOMMENDED SURVEY QUESTIONS (Q) AND POSSIBLE ANSWERS (A)

Q1: When you go to collect water, do you feel safe from any types of violence?

A1:

1) yes, feels safe

2) no, does not feel safe

3) don’t know / no response

Calculate the indicator’s value by dividing the number of respondents who respond “yes” by the total number of respondents (exclude those who do not know or do not respond) and multiplying the result by 100.

Important Comments

1) Disaggregate the data by age groups (girls / adult women) and geographical location.

2) Consider adding further questions assessing details about why, when, and where some respondents do not feel safe.
