Indicator Phrasing

English: number or % of people actively involved at the community level in improving landscape management

What is its purpose?

The indicator measures the number (or proportion) of people who are actively engaged in the community planning and implementation of technical measures required for sustainable management of the landscape. These include primarily farmers (and other land users) and relevant authorities.

How to Collect and Analyse the Required Data

Determine the indicator's value by using the following methodology:

1) Define what can count as people ‘actively involved’. For example, an ‘actively involved’ person can be someone who participated in a certain number of natural resources management activities (meetings, implementation of landscape management measures, etc.).

2) Determine which groups of people should be involved in the planning and implementation of landscape management measures (e.g. local authorities, members of NRM groups, etc.). If possible, quantify the number of people in these groups for further sampling.

3) Review existing documents and conduct interviews with the identified group members to assess how many people can be considered ‘actively involved’. If the number of these people is large and you cannot interview them all, interview a representative sample of respondents.

4) To calculate the indicator’s value, count the number of people who can be considered ‘actively involved’. If you are measuring the proportion of ‘actively involved’ people, divide the total number of respondents by those who can be considered ‘actively involved’. Multiply the result by 100 to convert it to a percentage.
